Value Education: Prospects and Needs in NEP Curriculum
Abstract
Education plays a pivotal role in enhancing the intellectual capabilities of individuals as well as in shaping their moral character and ethical conduct. Traditionally, education has been viewed as a holistic process that aims at the comprehensive development of students. However, in this era of globalization, the education system worldwide has increasingly prioritized skill development, technological proficiency, and employability-oriented skills to meet the demands of a competitive world. Although these developments have enhanced efficiency in the market sector, they have also led to the relative marginalization of ethical, moral, and value-oriented dimensions of education, which have significantly transformed the erstwhile teaching–learning processes in the Indian subcontinent. In response to these challenges, value-based education has emerged as a crucial pedagogical approach for nurturing the moral consciousness, ethical reasoning and empathy amongst the students. This paper examines the conceptual foundations of value-based education and highlights its significance in the context of NEP 2020. The study also discusses the strategic approaches for the effective integration of value education into modern curricula through systematic curriculum design, pedagogy, and institutional practices.
