Abstract

Education remains one of the most powerful instruments for social and economic development, with teachers serving as the driving force behind students' learning and personal growth. Across the world, however, the teaching profession has become increasingly demanding as educators are expected to perform multiple responsibilities beyond classroom instruction. They are required to address diverse learning needs, integrate technology into teaching, accomplish extensive administrative tasks, and respond to increasing accountability measures. These responsibilities have contributed to higher levels of work-related stress, emotional exhaustion, and burnout among teachers in many countries. Drawing on data from more than 100,000 teachers across over 40 education systems, Jerrim and Sims (2022) found that accountability demands are significantly associated with teacher stress, while the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD, 2021) emphasized that heavy workloads, limited well-being, and insufficient workplace support continue to affect teachers' professional satisfaction and retention. Despite these challenges, educators remain committed to their profession because of the meaningful relationships they build with learners and the opportunity to make a lasting difference in students' lives. The Philippine educational system reflects many of these global realities. In recent years, teachers have experienced increasing responsibilities as they adapted to curriculum reforms, digital and blended learning, learning recovery initiatives, and the diverse academic and psychosocial needs of learners. Beyond classroom teaching, educators are expected to prepare instructional materials, complete extensive documentation, attend school-related activities, and communicate regularly with parents and stakeholders. These responsibilities often extend beyond regular working hours, placing considerable demands on teachers' physical and emotional well-being. At the same time, Filipino educators continue to demonstrate resilience, adaptability, and commitment to ensuring quality education despite resource limitations and workplace pressures. Similar conditions are observed in many local public schools, where teachers strive to balance professional responsibilities with personal well-being while remaining dedicated to supporting learners. These realities highlight the need to understand not only the difficulties teachers encounter but also the experiences that enable them to remain motivated and committed to their profession (Carroll et al., 2022; Berger et al., 2022). Although recent studies have examined teacher stress, burnout, workload, job satisfaction, and well-being, much of the existing literature has relied on quantitative approaches that measure the prevalence of these conditions or examine relationships among variables. Comparatively fewer qualitative studies have explored how educators personally experience both the challenges and the meaningful successes that define their professional lives. The voices of teachers are essential in understanding how they cope with adversity, sustain their passion for teaching, and continue influencing the lives of their learners despite everyday difficulties. Addressing this gap, the present study, Shaping Lives: A Qualitative Inquiry on the Challenges and Triumphs of Educators, seeks to explore the lived experiences of educators by examining the challenges they face, the triumphs they celebrate, and the support systems that sustain their commitment to teaching. The findings are expected to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on teacher well-being and provide practical insights for school leaders, policymakers, and future researchers in designing programs that promote a more supportive and sustainable teaching profession.
