Abstract

As critical protection devices in DC grids, DC circuit breakers can cause overlapping grid fault characteristics, fundamentally altering system electromagnetic transient behavior. This paper analyzed the interruption process of hybrid DC circuit breakers (HDCCBs) with different topologies, elucidating the fundamental mechanisms of HDCCB interruption. The essential interruption characteristics of HDCCBs were investigated through comprehensive analysis of multiple topologies, with key parameters identified and an detailed model incorporating stray inductance effects developed. A universal equivalent electromagnetic transient model was established to characterize breaker performance, which is suitable for electromagnetic transient research. Verification was performed in a four-terminal MMC-HVDC grid based on the PSCAD/EMTDC platform, demonstrating effective fault clearance with the voltage peak error of universal circuit breakers not exceeding 5%, thereby addressing the critical challenge of fault discrimination under complex transient conditions.

Parameterizing DC Circuit Breaker Interruption Characteristics for Mapping HVDC Cable Transient Stress Regimes

The transition from point-to-point HVDC links to multiterminal HVDC (MT-HVDC) grids increases the need to understand how the interruption of DC current shapes transient dielectric stress on connected cable systems. This paper develops a compact parameterization of the DC circuit breaker–cable interface in a reduced 525...

A Transient-Minimized DC Fault Protection with Z-Source Circuit Breakers in Hybrid Microgrids

With the growth of emerging data centers and electric vehicles, DC power distribution and hybrid microgrids are attracting growing attention. Due to the lack of a natural zero-crossing point in DC current, reliable DC fault protection is critical. This paper introduces a transient-minimized fault protection scheme util...

A Review of DC Fault Current Limiters for HVDC Systems: Classification and Design Considerations of Non-Superconducting Topologies

The rapid expansion of voltage source converter-based high voltage DC grids has made DC fault protection a critical research priority, due to low network impedance and the absence of natural current zero crossings. DC fault current limiters have emerged as an effective means of suppressing the rapid rise of fault curre...

Enhancement of Renewable Power System Protection Reliability Using a Superconducting Fault Current Limiting Circuit Breaker (SFCL-CB)

The proliferation of inverter-based resources (IBRs) and energy storage systems in power grids has led to a decline in the short-circuit ratio (SCR) and reduced fault current magnitudes, compromising the reliability of conventional overcurrent relays (OCRs) and creating protection blind zones. To resolve these vulnerab...

Transient Power Angle Stability Analysis of Grid-Forming Converters Under Resistive Short-Circuit Faults

This paper examines the transient power-angle stability of grid-forming converters (GFMs) subjected to grid faults. Existing studies commonly simplify the network as a purely inductive line and use ideal fault assumptions, which makes it difficult to describe how practical fault conditions influence power transmission...

Study on interruption characteristics of a current-injection-based soft turn-off solid-state DC circuit breaker

Driven by the “dual carbon” goals, the large-scale application of renewable power generation, DC distribution networks, and energy storage systems has increasingly highlighted the short-circuit protection challenges in low-voltage DC (LVDC) systems. LVDC faults are characterized by rapidly rising fault currents and the...
