Using refined absorption, we prove that for every integer $g\ge 1$ and real $\gamma>0$, and for sufficiently large $n$, there exists an $n^{-1+\gamma}$-spread distribution on Latin squares of order $n$ and girth at least $g$ that have no proper subsquares. This implies a combinatorial proof of Hilton's conjecture from the 1970s (recently proved algebraically by Allsop and Wanless) that for all sufficiently large $n$, there exists a subsquare-free Latin square of order $n$; indeed, it implies there exist at least $n^{(1-o(1))n^2}$ subsquare-free squares. Simultaneously it also implies the existence of high girth Latin squares (recently proved by Kwan, Sah, Sawhney and Simkin) and even an $n^{-1+\gamma}$-spread distribution on high girth Latin squares.
We prove that for every integer $N\geq2$, there exist positive integers $a$ and $b$ such that $N=a+b$ and $\Omega(ab)\leq33$, where $\Omega(n)$ denotes the number of prime factors of $n$, counted with multiplicity. This improves the previous bound of $40$ obtained by Dudek and Dunn. The proof applies the explicit Fried...
We prove that, for every constant $\varepsilon>0$ and every function $f:\Sigma^n\to\{0, 1\}$, there is a coalition of $O(n/\sqrt{\log n})$ coordinates and a target output $b\in\{0, 1\}$ such that, after the remaining coordinates are sampled uniformly and independently, the coalition can choose its values to make the ou...
For practical $N$ let $h(N)$ be the least $k$ such that every integer $1\le m\le N$ is a sum of at most $k$ distinct divisors of $N$. We prove $h(n!)\le(2\log2+o(1))\,n/\log n$. This improves the bounds of order $n/(\log n)^{1/2-\varepsilon}$ established in Tenenbaum-Yokota's Lemma 4 and Yokota's 1995 knapsack note. We...
For a nontrivial finite abelian group $G$, let $\nu(G)$ be the smallest integer $\ell$ such that every zero-sum free sequence $T$ over $G$ of length at least $\ell$ has the following property: all nonzero elements of $G$ that do not occur as a subsequence sum of $T$ lie in a proper coset of some subgroup of $G$. It is...

Determining the properties of a random polynomial has fuelled significant investigation over the past century. One driving force of this research is a 1936 paper of Van der Waerden. Fix $n \ge 3$ and let $E_n(B)$ be the number of monic, irreducible, non-$S_n$ polynomials $f = X^n + a_1 X^{n-1} + \cdots + a_n$ with $|a_...

Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field and let $p \ge 5$ be a prime that is unramified in $K$. Let $\mathcal{A}_f/\mathbb{Q}$ be an abelian variety of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type associated with a weight-two modular form $f$, with good non-ordinary reduction at $p$, and suppose that $(f,K)$ satisfies the generalized Heegner...
