Efficient separation of lignin from mild alkaline hydrolysate of bagasse by selective adsorbent resin

2026 · BioResources · 0 citations

Abstract

Amongst industrial lignins, such as alkaline and kraft lignins, lignin from hemicellulose pre-treatment liquor is gaining considerable interest because of its various properties. To explore application potential, a lignin sample that was selectively adsorbed by XAD-16N resin from mild alkaline extracts of sugarcane bagasse waste was identified by structural analysis. Trace amounts of hemicellulose were found in the adsorbates that exhibited lignin carbohydrate complexes (LCCs) structure. Prominent NMR signals indicated β-O-4ʹ, β-5ʹ, β-βʹ, and β-1ʹ structures in the side chain, and aromatic signals corresponded to major bagasse lignin units: p-coumarate and ferulate. The quantity of benzyl ether (BE) was 3.33 per 100 Ar-units, which was considerably higher than that of hydrolysate obtained from hydrothermal pretreatments. The content of various hydroxyl groups of mild alkaline lignin obtained by resin adsorption was higher than that of lignin isolated by other methods. Moreover, the adsorbed lignin was relatively pure, and its thermal stability was superior to that of the centrifuged lignin. These results revealed new characteristics of lignin and LCC structures obtained via mild alkaline pretreatment and resin adsorption.

Review on Separation and Modification Technologies of Kraft Lignin and Their Potential Applications as Environmental Materials

Kraft lignin is a major biomass byproduct generated in large quantities from the kraft pulping process and has attracted attention as a renewable aromatic polymer with the potential to replace petroleum-based aromatic compounds. Since the kraft process accounts for the majority of global pulp production, large amounts...

Mixed-acid and organic-amine pretreatments for effective sugar production from corncob

Effective pretreatment is essential for producing fermentable sugars from lignocellulosic biomass. In this study, mixed-acid and organic-amine pretreatments were conducted for corncob deconstruction, component fractionation, lignin removal, and enzymatic saccharification. The sulfuric acid/maleic acid system (1:1, w/w)...

Lignin Extraction from Coconut Pith by Alkaline and Organosolv Treatment: Characterization and Optimization of Lignin Yield and Purity

Effective coconut pith lignin (CPL) extraction remained an obstacle since lignin must be removed without causing significant destruction of cellulose fibers. This work seeks to solve these challenges by improving the extraction procedure for CPL to generate a material appropriate for industrial uses, such as anti-corro...

WOOD WASTE-DERIVED ORGANOSOLV LIGNIN-BASED CARBON FIBERS FOR ENERGY STORAGE APPLICATIONS

This study examined the feasibility of recycling wood waste to produce organosolv lignin suitable as a precursor for carbon fibers. Mixed wood waste, pine, and elm sawdust were used as feedstock. Lignin was isolated using an organosolv method with a mixture of formic and acetic acids, which reduced the use of aggressiv...

Lewis acid-diol deep eutectic solvents for structurally retained lignin fractionation and corn stover saccharification.

Lewis acid-diol-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were constructed for technical lignin dissolution and corn stover (CS) fractionation. The DESs showed high dissolution capacities toward kraft lignin, enzymatic hydrolysis lignin and alkaline lignin with maximum solubilities of 58.4 wt%, 78.8 wt% and 45.5 wt%, respect...

Base-Free Ozonation of Lignin for Rapid Production of Value-Added Aromatics: Structural Factors and Mechanistic Insights.

Lignin is a renewable aromatic resource, yet its efficient depolymerization requires metal catalysts under high temperature, pressure, and strong base. This study employed ozone as a clean oxidant for lignin depolymerization under mild, catalyst- and base-free conditions. Grass lignin, rich in p-coumaric acid (pCA), fe...
