Abstract

Physics education focuses on improving teaching and learning practices through research-based curriculum materials. Many research groups have developed innovative curricula on various physics concepts, including kinematics, electricity, and thermodynamics. One research area on integrating the new curricula examined students’ naïve beliefs, misconceptions, learning difficulties, and the knowledge-in-pieces framework. This study examined students’ reasoning in kinematics using a framework analysis of resources. Participants were 198 college science students who solved a physics problem, and 40 of them participated in an interview. Phenomenographic analysis showed that students used procedural, epistemic, and argumentative resources in their solutions. The study has implications for instructional design in college physics education.
