Abstract

Fostering productive dispositions – positive beliefs, perseverance, and emotional engagement – is vital for student achievement in physics, mathematics, and integrated STEM learning. This study explores how rich tasks grounded in solving real-world problems, typically reported in mathematics education, can be used to support students’ productive dispositions in physics. A series of ten rich tasks was designed and implemented with Irish primary students (aged 11-13 years). The task, “Redesigning Your Classroom,” explicitly engaged students with concepts of measurement, spatial reasoning, and physical modelling, and supported student learning across the disciplines of physics and mathematics. Data collected from 109 primary students revealed increased engagement, confidence, and conceptual understanding in these topics and highlighted the role of rich tasks in physics education. The study highlights that task design principles for mathematics can be transferred and extended to physics, offering a pathway for learning in the nexus between physics and mathematics.

Embodied Narratives for Physics Education: Bridging Concepts, Emotions, and Movements

Physics is often taught as a purely intellectual subject, disconnected from the body and emotional engagement, particularly in undergraduate STEM courses. In Milan, in the “Preparation of Didactical Experiences 1” course for master’s students in mathematics or physics, we integrated about 20 hours of embodied activitie...

Thai Secondary School Students’ Physics Identities: Measurement, Exploration, and Structural Analysis

Physics is a scientific discipline that not only helps students understand physical phenomena but also underpins many applied fields. In learning physics, students should develop their physics identity—the ability to see oneself as a “physics person”—in addition to acquiring knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Despite gr...

How teaching style influences math learning: Comparing discovery and traditional instruction

Mathematics achievement and engagement often decline as students move through secondary school, and the way mathematics is taught may be part of the reason. In this study, we compared traditional direct teaching with discovery-based teaching in mathematics among secondary school students. Forty seventh-grade students f...
