Unpacking Reading Processes for Analogical Problem-Solving: A Verbal Protocol Analysis

Aug 2026 · Korean Educational Research Association · 0 citations

Abstract

This study explored how 11 Korean undergraduates constructed understanding while reading and how their reading processes were related to analogical problem-solving. Think-aloud data collected during reading and problem-solving tasks were analyzed based on the Landscape Model, focusing on standards of coherence. The case analyses revealed two main findings. First, some successful cases were characterized by specific and accurate standards of coherence and text-driven processing centered on key textual relations. In contrast, some less successful cases involved background knowledge that was not sufficiently coordinated with textual information. Second, problem-solving outcomes varied even among cases in which coherent understandings of the source texts had been constructed, particularly in relation to whether participants evaluated the validity of unfamiliar information in the target problems. These findings suggest that analogical problem-solving may involve constructing key relational representations, coordinating background knowledge with textual information, and evaluating mappings within the target domain. Implications for reading instruction are also discussed.

Metacomprehension accuracy with multiple texts: a comprehensive approach

This study investigated metacomprehension accuracy for university students reading multiple texts about the same topic, using a Dutch translation of a German multiple document comprehension instrument. Based on research with single texts, we expected students’ performance estimates to have relatively low accuracy, as w...

Mindful Reading: A Moodle-Based Approach to Metacognitive Strategy Use in English for Specific Purposes

This study examined how Moodle-based continuous assessment tasks associate with undergraduates’ metacognitive engagement in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) reading in a first-year engineering course at a Sri Lankan public university. It used a single-case study design, treating a public university’s ESP reading mod...

Reading comprehension across paper and screen: performance, processes, and cognitive predictors in different tasks

ABSTRACT Going beyond the study of differences between media, the present study investigated the extent to which individual (i.e. reading comprehension, updating, and verbal/nonverbal reasoning) and contextual (medium) factors contribute to explaining variability across performance (accuracy), process measures (time-on...

The Influence of Top-Down Reading on Reading Difficulties and Reading Strategies

While reading and understanding texts, a reader experiences a complex cognitive process, which depends on prior knowledge and contextual clues to derive meaning. Though these top-down processing strategies are essential for fluent reading, many struggling readers may face challenges when applying these methods. This st...

Developing Inferential and Monitoring Strategies in Adult EFL Reading: A Study from North Macedonia

The reading comprehension of English as a foreign language is often measured in outcomes that value accuracy, with a relatively under-investigated body of literature on the individual cognitive and metacognitive processes involved. This study examines the use and development of inference and monitoring comprehension st...

The Listen–read–discuss strategy for improving reading comprehension: a conceptual review

Reading comprehension is a key component of literacy, which contributes to academic success and lifelong learning, although most people who study English as a Foreign language (EFL) continue to have difficulties due to limited vocabulary, lack of basic knowledge, and ineffective reading strategies. This study provides...
