Existing colorimetric sensing strategies based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are largely limited to the detection of free metal ions, leaving metal–organic complexes widely present in real water bodies undetectable. Herein, we develop a simple colorimetric method based on the anti-aggregation effect of bare AuNPs for the simultaneous detection of free Cr3+ and its organic complexes. Tetrabutylphosphonium bromide (TPB) dissociates into phosphonium cations ([P(C4H9)4]+), which neutralize the negatively charged surface of AuNPs via electrostatic attraction, thereby inducing particle aggregation and a color change from wine-red to blue. Under strongly alkaline conditions, Cr3+ converts to negatively charged [Cr(OH)6]3− species. These anionic species then compete with the AuNPs for the phosphonium cations, blocking the aggregation process and preserving the wine-red color. This competitive mechanism is further extended to the detection of Cr3+-EDTA, Cr3+-tartrate, and Cr3+-oxalate complexes, as they also transform into [Cr(OH)6]3− under alkaline conditions. Without the need for tedious surface modification, the proposed method is simple to operate and exhibits excellent sensitivity and selectivity for both free and complexed Cr3+ in real water samples. It thus provides a reliable analytical tool for monitoring chromium pollution in environmental waters.
Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace element, but excessive accumulation in the human body can cause severe neurotoxic effects, making sensitive monitoring in biological fluids such as urine important for public health. In this work, red-fluorescent silver nanoclusters (MMTA@Ag NCs) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties were synthesized via a facile one-pot strategy at room temperature using 2-mercapto-4-methyl-5-thiazoleacetic acid (MMTA) as the capping ligand. The as-prepared Ag NCs initially exhibited weak fluorescence...
Developing a low-cost, highly sensitive, and accurate fluorescence-based approach for Cu2+ detection is crucial for reducing heavy metal pollution in industrial effluent. Here, we report a newly synthesized Schiff base europium metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) and demonstrate its use for turn-off fluorescent detection...

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is an important detection content in many biological reaction detection. At present, the detection methods of ATP mainly focused on electrophoresis, optical analysis, chromatography, and bioluminescence. However, these methods are not widely applied due to the high cost, complicated operati...

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is an emerging endocrine-disrupting contaminant, and its rapid monitoring in food is critically important. We developed an aptamer-induced charge neutralization and aggregation of gold nanorods (AuNRs) strategy for facile detection of DEHP. The negatively charged aptamers were adsorbed...
