Abstract
From GRACE and GRACE-FO we get time variable information from the Earth’s gravity field since 2002. The monthly time series obtained from science centers can be represented as a surface water layer. By sampling the oceans at mascons we obtain a mass against time signal which represents the barystatic component of the sea level rise signal which is confronted with satellite altimetry since 1992, the combination of both geodetic results allows to estimate the density change in the ocean domain for which profiling float measurements can be used as an independent source. Of particular interest is the effect of glacial isostatic adjustment which shows up in both gravimetry and altimetry. The GIA correction determines for a part the implementation of the geocenter correction that is used during the GRACE data processing. Depending on the processing choices to represent ocean mass and the GIA correction that is required we find barystatic sea level rates varying between 1.9 and 2.4 mm/yr whereby we remark that the uncertainty is larger than previously expected. The volume change in the oceans is remarkably stable, it remains at 3.7 mm/yr with a noticeable acceleration of 0.2 mm/yr2. This means that the density change due to temperature and salinity changes in the ocean domain varies between 1.3 and 1.8 mm/yr.
Global ocean mass change is a major driver of present-day global mean sea level (GMSL) rise and a key indicator of climate change. Over the past three decades, mass loss from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets has been a major contributor to global ocean mass change. Since 2002, GRACE/-FO has provided invaluable ob...

Since 2002, the GRACE and GRACE-FO satellite missions have been monitoring monthly variations in the gravitational field caused by mass redistributions within the Earth’s system. To extract information on the global and regional water cycle, estimates of the gravity field must be corrected to account for several instru...

Satellite altimetry missions have transformed our capability to observe ice sheet surface elevation change with unprecedented spatial precision. While altimetry excels at localized surface height changes, converting height to mass requires firn air content corrections. Conversely, satellite gravimetry (GRACE/GRACE-FO)...

Despite improvements from the GOT5.6 ocean tide model adopted for RL07 processing, tide model error remains a significant source of temporal aliasing in GRACE gravimetry. This effect is felt particularly in shallow shelves with complex bathymetry and a larger than normal presence of nonlinear tides, as well as in regio...

Temporal aliasing of sub-monthly gravimetric signals originating from the Earth's fluid envelope is a major source of error in time-variable gravity field models derived from the GRACE and GRACE Follow-On missions. Minimizing these errors to detect gravimetric signals providing information on solid Earth dynamics and t...
