Abstract
This paper presents a transformer-based reinforcement learning framework for time-critical multi-robot task allocation, where the objective is to minimize mission completion time (i.e., makespan) by formulating the problem as a min–max multi-depot open vehicle routing problem. In this problem, conventional methods often do not scale well to large instances. Standard transformer policies scale better but are sensitive to the order in which robots are allocated, since early allocations constrain later choices and can produce imbalanced workloads that lead to a prolonged makespan. To address this, we propose Balance-Aware Pointerformer (BAP), which adapts problem augmentation and multi-start decoding into a diverse-order exploration strategy with a shared baseline, supported by a memory-efficient encoder that keeps this exploration tractable. In addition, BAP incorporates a balance-aware context embedding that explicitly encodes global and per-robot progress, guiding the policy toward workload-balanced allocations. Experimental results on uniform and clustered task distributions demonstrate that BAP remains competitive with a time-limited MILP solver on small instances, improves solution quality on larger-scale problems, and achieves lower makespan than representative heuristic and learning-based baselines across nearly all tested settings.
This study proposes a multi-objective optimization-based framework for task allocation and path planning to address the challenges faced by multi-robot systems in transport-oriented task environments. The framework considers robot capability heterogeneity and load capacity, aiming to minimize task execution time and ov...
To address slow dynamic-reconfiguration response and difficulty in satisfying hard constraints in the task scheduling of heterogeneous maritime unmanned platforms, this paper proposes a constraint-aware proximal policy optimization (CPPO). CPPO models task scheduling as a Markov decision process; applies a three-layer...
The growing demand for small-lot, multi-variety e-commerce deliveries has intensified operational workloads in warehouse picking operations. Goods-to-Person (GTP) systems employing Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) have been widely adopted to address these challenges. While substantial research has focused on task alloca...
This article addresses the critical reliability and safety challenges in multistation multirobot welding task allocation for automated manufacturing, where conventional task assignment approaches often overlook physical collision risks, leading to system failures and production downtime. Unlike existing methods that ei...

As more companies embrace the use of autonomous mobile robots to organize their smart warehouses, one of the
major issues facing them is the coordination of these fleets under very restrictive throughputs. Task allocation and path
planning go hand in hand: if tasks are assigned without considering congestion, then ea...
