Pharmacological Activity & Therapeutic Potential of Bioactive Flavonoid Rutin
Abstract
Rutin is a naturally occurring flavonoid glycoside widely distributed in plants and plant-derived foods. It is recognized for its diverse pharmacological activities and considerable therapeutic potential. The present review summarizes the biological and pharmacological properties of rutin, with particular emphasis on its antioxidant, cytoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, cardiovascular, antiplatelet, antidepressant, and anti-ulcer activities. Rutin exhibits strong free-radical scavenging and antioxidant effects and has been reported to reduce reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation while enhancing endogenous antioxidant defenses. Its cytoprotective and anticancer potential has been associated with modulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and cellular signaling pathways. Rutin also demonstrates anti-inflammatory effects through regulation of inflammatory mediators and pathways including NF-κB and MAPK. Experimental studies further indicate cardioprotective, antithrombotic, neuroprotective, and gastroprotective effects. These diverse activities suggest that rutin may have potential in the prevention and management of oxidative stress-related and inflammatory disorders. However, further studies, particularly well-designed human investigations, are required to establish its therapeutic efficacy, mechanisms, safety, and clinical applicability.
