Geotechnical Challenges and Failure Mechanisms in Indian Underground Coal Mines: Roof Stability, Pillar Design and Floor Behaviour under Complex Geological Conditions

Abstract

Underground coal mining in India is constrained by complex Gondwana geology, variable rock-mass quality, increasing extraction depths, and heterogeneous stress conditions. Weak laminated shale, jointed sandstone, high horizontal stresses, pillar degradation, floor instability, and mining-induced deformation frequently interact during underground extraction. This paper synthesizes the geotechnical evidence presented in the source report, focusing on roof and rib stability, pillar behaviour, floor response, stress redistribution, and associated failure mechanisms. Major Indian coalfields including Jharia, Raniganj, Singrauli, Talcher, Wardha Valley, and Godavari Valley are considered within the broader geological framework. Representative coal-measure rocks commonly exhibit fair-to-poor rock-mass quality, with RMR values generally ranging from 35 to 60. The reported high horizontal-to-vertical stress ratio of 1.5–3.0 at greater depths changes the dominant failure response from gravity-controlled instability toward stress-driven deformation. Field observations indicate roof convergence of 0.5–5 mm/day during development, increasing during depillaring. Numerical analyses demonstrate substantial reductions in roof sag and plastic-zone development following systematic reinforcement. Case studies from Jharia and Singrauli illustrate how delamination, wedge failure, rib spalling, interface shearing, moisture weakening, and abutment loading can combine into progressive instability. The synthesis indicates that site-specific characterization, calibrated numerical modelling, appropriate pillar dimensions, reinforcement, extraction sequencing, and continuous monitoring are necessary for reliable ground control under Indian conditions.

Overburden Strata Synchronous Breaking and Dynamic Load Mine Pressure Mechanism of Cross-Ditch Mining in Close-Distance Coal Seams

Repeated mining of shallow-buried close-distance coal seams can disturb the fractured strata remaining in the goaf of the upper coal seam. Under gully terrain, mining disturbance is coupled with surface-relief effects, which may reactivate the overburden structure and induce dynamic strata-pressure behavior. In particu...

Multi‑strata hydraulic fracturing via surface vertical wells for rockburst mitigation in an extra‑thick coal seam under a protective layer: a case study

In extra-thick coal seams under a protective layer, the advanced coal mass (ETUPAC) may experience stress recovery and even abnormal concentration after a prolonged mining cessation, leading to rockburst occurrences under strong mining-induced tremors. In this study, a 'combined cantilever + voussoir beam' overburden s...

Scientific basis of geomechanical monitoring and support design in deep gold mining

Deep-level underground gold mining is characterized by complex geomechanical conditions, particularly within tectonically disturbed zones where stress redistribution and rock mass heterogeneity significantly affect excavation stability. This study aims to develop scientific foundations for ground support design based o...

Measurement of surrounding-rock deformation and support-resistance demand in roof-cut automatically formed roadways of inclined thick coal seams

The deformation control of roof-cut automatically formed roadways in inclined thick coal seams is strongly dependent on the reliable measurement of roof subsidence, rib convergence, stress redistribution and support-resistance demand. Taking the 1703 fully mechanized top-coal caving face of Hongling Coal Mine as an eng...

Integrated Geotechnical Risk Assessment of Roof–Pillar–Floor Interaction in Underground Coal Mines under Indian Geological Conditions

Surface subsidence associated with pillar extraction represents a coupled geotechnical and societal hazard because the severity of ground movement depends not only on mining induced deformation but also on the vulnerability and exposure of surface assets. This study developed an integrated framework for assessing, clas...
