Abstract
The design of a ship energy system can be complex due to multiple design options (e.g choice for component types or occurence) and constraints (e.g environmental, economical, military). The optimization problem that can help to find an optimal architecture (components and associated connections) is typically referred as a synthesis, design and operation optimization (SDO) problem. Evolutionary algorithms are usually employed to tackle SDO problems and they provide good results. However, due to the very important number of objective function evaluations involved, the physical modeling must remain very simple (causal behavior without differential equations or matrix inversions). A Bayesian optimization (BO) approach is proposed in this article to tackle this issue. The expected advantage of BO is its ability to represent a global approximation of the objective function with few data points while its weakness lies in the number of optimization variables it can handle. This high-dimensional challenge is tackled here by a decomposition of the optimization problem into the different modes that represent the ship mission profile. A numerical example is presented for a ship energy system than can achieve propulsion and electricity production by multiple means. The effect of the formulation of constraints in the objective function will also be discussed as it can have a strong impact on the optimization results.
Current transmission design methodologies often optimize single parameters or physical fields, while conventional heuristic algorithms suffer from premature convergence and lack interpretability. To address these limitations, this paper proposes an integrated optimization design method for planetary gear sets and wet c...

This work addresses the multiobjective reliability-based design optimization (MRBDO) problem involving structural dynamical systems under stochastic excitation. Instead of trying to determine the entire Pareto front, the goal is exploring specific tradeoffs between objectives. To this end, a compromise programming stra...

With the large-scale integration of distributed renewable energy and the increasing volatility of electric and gas loads, traditional deterministic models struggle to accurately characterize the dynamic response behavior of park-level energy systems. To address this issue, this paper proposes a multi-objective operatio...

Berthing path planning for ships in the presence of ocean currents is a challenging task. Several relevant methods have been proposed, but they all assume a constant surge velocity for the whole path. This hypothesis makes it impossible to achieve the simultaneous optimization of speed and energy consumption. To deal w...

Hybrid Electric Vehicle powertrain optimization faces uncertainty when driving conditions vary, when components age, and when modeling errors occur, which conventional optimization methods often neglect. This paper presents the uncertainty-aware multi-objective Bayesian optimization framework for the HEV powertrain des...
