Abstract

This paper presents several enhancements to the universal generation of realistic 3D urban scenes with detailed roof shapes, leveraging key data sources such as OpenStreetMap and Digital Terrain Models. The prior approach relied on core principles of 3D mesh generation, producing models compatible with various 3D rendering systems and game engines. In this study, cadastral data is employed to automatically determine the number of building levels, utilizing datasets from the Spanish Virtual Cadastral Office for this determination. The proposed reconstruction method successfully processes approximately 97% of OpenStreetMap building entities that include valid roof definitions. A polygon‐covering algorithm was implemented to generate volumetric models for buildings with complex footprints and representative roof shapes. In future work, the capacity of this algorithm and the quality of the terrain models can still be improved.

Critical factors in 3D model reconstruction using the Roofer algorithm: an analysis of geometric and topological consistency in mountainous cities

Semantic 3D city models (s3DCM) are a key component of urban digital twins (UDT) because they integrate geometry and semantic information in three-dimensional environments. However, generating geometrically consistent and interoperable models remains challenging due to data heterogeneity and the sensitivity of the reco...

Assessing and fixing LOD2 building models for Urban Energy Digital Twin

Recent advances in 3D reconstruction have enabled the automated generation of city models from LiDAR point clouds and aerial imagery. Although these methods produce visually convincing models, they are primarily designed for visualization purposes and often lack the geometric and topological quality required for Urban...

Robust and Detailed 3D Building Model Generation from Airborne Laser Scanning Point Clouds via Piecewise Affine-Linear Mumford-Shah Segmentation

The increasing availability of high-resolution Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data has expanded the potential for high-fidelity 3D city modeling. At the same time, more and more use cases have surfaced which crucially require these high-fidelity 3D models to derive geometrical building properties in a more straightforwa...

Why Has LOD3 Not Scaled? From Reconstruction Algorithms to the Generation of 3D City Models

Level of Detail 3 (LOD3) has been part of the CityGML standard for nearly two decades, yet it has never become a routine product in operational 3D city model production. While LOD2 building models are now widely generated and maintained by mapping agencies, LOD3 remains largely limited to research prototypes and pilot...
