Abstract

Understanding the hydrochemistry of river water is crucial for assessing hydrological processes, water-source contributions, and human impacts in rapidly urbanising basins. The Kathmandu Valley, a tectonic intermontane basin in central Nepal, have a dense river network, including major rivers such as the Bagmati, Bishnumati, Manahara, Dhobi, Hanumate, Godawari, Kodku, Nakhu, and Balkhu. Despite the importance of river systems for local water resources, spatial and temporal chemical investigations of these rivers remain limited. In the current study, 80 sampling sites were selected from nine rivers during the wet (August 2017) and dry (February 2018) seasons. Total 160 water samples were collected, 80 samples from each season. Ions were analysed by ion chromatography. Chemical analysis showed a seasonal shift from Ca²⁺ dominance in the wet season to Na⁺ in the dry season, with significant temporal variation in most ions (p < 0.01). Strong correlations among ions indicated human influence, particularly increased NH₄⁺-N and PO₄³⁻-P levels during the dry season, except in Godawari Khola. Hydrochemical facies analysis revealed that river water was predominantly Ca-HCO₃⁻ type during the wet season, shifting to Na-K-HCO₃⁻ type in the dry season for northern rivers. Conversely, southern rivers largely maintained their original water type. The river systems of the valley were grouped into four clusters by Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) based on similarity of chemical concentrations. Hanumante Khola exhibited the highest chemical concentrations, indicating a heavily polluted river within the valley during the dry season.

CHANGES IN WATER POLLUTION IN THE KARATAL RIVER DURING GLACIER SHRINKAGE IN THE SHYZHY AND KORA RIVER BASINS

This study examines the spatial and seasonal variability of water quality in glacier-fed river systems within the Karatal River basin, located in the north-western sector of the Zhetysu Alatau (Kazakhstan). The investigation focused on the Kora and Shyzhy rivers, which play a key role in forming the hydrological regime...

Hydrogeochemical Controls and Water Quality Dynamics of the River Kali, Southwestern India

The relationships among temporal and spatial variations in the hydrogeochemistry of a tropical river in southwestern India were explored to identify catchment-scale processes. River Kali was sampled between 2018 and 2019 to characterise dissolved solute chemistry and water quality. The results indicate that dissolved...

Recent Temporal and Seasonal Variations in Water Quality Assessment Along the Downstream at Pahang River Basin using KNIME-Based Analysis

Water quality in tropical river systems is subject to significant seasonal and temporal variation due to monsoonal climate patterns and growing anthropogenic pressures. This study investigates the recent temporal and seasonal trends in six key water quality parameters—pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen deman...

Monsoon-controlled hydrogeochemical processes govern seasonal water quality in the downstream Bagmati River, India

Understanding seasonal hydrochemical variability is essential for sustainable water resource management in monsoon-dominated regions experiencing increasing anthropogenic pressure. Although the Bagmati River has been extensively studied within the Kathmandu Valley (Nepal), comprehensive hydrochemical investigations of...

Hydrochemical Responses to Land Use and Seasonality in a Semiarid Watershed Under Anthropogenic Pressure

Anthropogenic activities and hydroclimatic variability have intensified hydrochemical changes and water-quality degradation in semiarid watersheds, increasing the risks of salinization and eutrophication. This study evaluated the influence of land use and seasonal variability on the hydrochemical and microbiological ch...

Seasonal Dynamics of Water Quality in a Tributary of the Beas River (Western Himalayas, India)

This study examines how physiñochemical water parameters fluctuate seasonally in a tributary of the Beas River in Himachal Pradesh (the Western Himalayas), with the goal of assessing the degree of water quality deterioration and pinpointing pollution sources. Water samples were collected across four distinct seasons an...
