Abstract
Although technologically promising for producing petrochemicals directly from renewable resources, CO2 hydrogenation to methanol remains a formidable challenge due to the activity-selectivity trade-off. Current industrial copper-based catalysts often generate substantial CO byproducts that limit CO2 utilization efficiency. Herein, we report a highly active and selective Cu/amorphous ZrO2 (Cu/a-ZrO2) catalyst by using a modified solvothermal method, which achieves a space-time methanol productivity of up to ∼1560 gmethanol kgcat–1 h–1 with a high methanol selectivity of ∼76% at 260 °C. The strategic integration of in situ synchrotron-based vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry (SVUV-PIMS), multimodal in situ/operando infrared spectroscopies, kinetic isotope experiments, and computational studies collectively demonstrate that the direct dissociation of C–O bond in CO2 generates *CO followed by subsequent hydrogenation to methanol via relay catalysis on adjacent Cu+–ZrOx and Cu0 dual sites, which subsequently promote the initial activation step of CO2 and the subsequent hydrogenation steps of *CO to methanol, respectively. We confirm that methanol synthesis follows a *CO-mediated mechanism on these sites, highlighting the origin of the excellent performance of self-designed Cu/a-ZrO2.
Selective oxidation of methane to methanol using molecular oxygen (O2) is a promising route for upgrading abundant methane resources, but is limited by the difficulty of coupling O2 activation with selective C–H functionalization. Herein, we report a relay catalysis strategy that spatially separates CO-assisted O2 ac...

Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) is an important intermediate in various market sectors, while its industrial production mainly relies on fossil fuels-derived C2H4 and elevated temperature/pressure, leading to massive CO2 emission. In this study, we proposed a novel electrothermal tandem strategy to efficiently synthesize CH3CHO...

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction to ethanol (C2H5OH) offers a sustainable carbon recycling route but is limited by inefficient C-C coupling under visible light irradiation. Here, we report a defect-engineered WO3-x/InSAs (SAs, single atoms) photocatalyst with a dynamic dual-site relay mechanism, where electron-rich W-VO (V...

Selective electroreduction of CO2 (CO2RR) to n-propanol represents a promising route for low-carbon chemical synthesis. However, achieving high selectivity at industrially relevant current densities remains challenging due to inefficient *CO utilization and strong competition from C2 products. Herein, we demonstrate th...
Developing efficient catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol remains a challenge due to the inherent trade-off between activity, selectivity, and cost. Herein, a series of metal-promoted Cu catalysts (Zr, Zn, Ga) were synthesized via a ligand-modulated oxalate coprecipitation strategy using malachite-derived CuO...

Direct hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) to acetic acid, a key commodity chemical, offers a sustainable route to valorize greenhouse gases but is plagued by CO2 inertness, thermodynamic barriers, and poor selectivity for C-C coupling over competing overhydrogenation. This paper describes the design and synthesis o...
