Enhancement of Point Cloud Data for Rock Slope Stability Analysis

Abstract

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry offers a safe and efficient alternative to manual rock mass characterization in hazardous terrain. This study evaluates quality control measures, compares the discontinuity of accuracy data with and without Ground Control Points (GCPs), and performs kinematic a stability analysis of a sedimentary rock slope. Using a GPS-integrated drone and GNSS coordinates, a high-resolution 3D model was generated in Agisoft Metashape, and discontinuity orientations were extracted using CloudCompare. Results indicate that optimal UAV camera angles and an image overlap of 60%–80% are critical for achieving high model fidelity. Incorporating GCPs significantly improved accuracy; the mean percentage differences in dip direction decreased from 5.21%–22.01% (without GCPs) to 1.66%–10.06% (with GCPs). Comparative analysis with manual scanline surveys demonstrated strong agreement, successfully identifying stable conditions, as well as wedge and planar failures modes. These findings underscore the necessity of GCPs in UAV-based mapping for reliable kinematic rock slope assessment.

A Unified 4D UAV Photogrammetry Methodology for Mine Dump Slope Monitoring, Displacement Analysis and Time Dependent Factor of Safety Evaluation

Abstract Landslides of mine dump slopes are recognized as high-consequence hazards in surface mining. They occur due to the rapid construction from heterogeneous waste materials, the continuous evolution of their geometry during dumping, and the strong influence of foundation conditions and hydromechanical triggers on...

The Influence of Ground Control Points (GCPs) for Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) Using UAVs

Unmanned aerial vehicles are a modern technology for collecting data for aerial surveying to produce high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs). This accuracy is achieved using ground control points (GCPs), which are specific locations on the ground with known coordinates that help improve the precision of aerial...

Applications of drone-based photogrammetry and multi-resolution raster data processing with fine detail for fish pass analysis

High-resolution topographic data are crucial for accurately modeling hydraulic structures, particularly fish passes, where subtle geomorphic features govern flow heterogeneity and fish navigation. Conventional remote sensing approaches often lack the spatial resolution to resolve such microrelief. This study demonstrat...

A UAV-Based Engineering-Detectability Framework for Slope-Road Crack Propagation Assessment

Repeated non-equidistant unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) inspections of slope-road cracks require measurements from different distances, poses, and image scales to remain comparable and sufficiently precise for engineering-state decisions. Existing studies rarely integrate cross-view physical conversion, measurement unce...

Monitoring Coastal Geomorphic Change and Sediment Transport Using Kite Aerial Photography (KAP) and Structure-from-Motion (SfM) Photogrammetry

Coastal areas are particularly suitable study sites for kite aerial photography (KAP) surveys because of consistent wind and open space. This study uses KAP surveys conducted in January, March, June, August, and October 2025, combined with Structure from Motion photogrammetry and spatially variable error modeling for D...
