Abstract

A process diagram illustrating the steps followed for the modeling inputs and methodology, as well as the findings. These include the intensification of streamflow seasonality and the projected moderate to high long-term water stress in the Higueras River basin. Climate change threatens water availability in semi-arid Andean watersheds, where cities such as Huánuco (Peru) rely primarily on surface water for urban supply. This study evaluates future changes in water availability in the Higueras River Basin by integrating projections from 22 CMIP5 Global Climate Models (GCMs), Bias Correction, the GR2M hydrological model, population growth projections, and the Water Stress Index (WSI). This integrated framework addresses a gap in previous Andean studies by integrating climate projections, hydrological modeling, and urban water demand. Future water demand was estimated assuming a 2.59% annual population growth rate and a per-capita demand of 220 liters/person/day. Streamflow was simulated for 2003–2019 and projected for the short (2020–2036), medium (2037–2053), and long term (2054–2070) under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. Results show water surpluses during the short term, whereas deficits emerge in August and September during the medium-term (up to 0.31 m3/s) and intensify during July–September in the long term, reaching 1.10 m3/s in August under RCP8.5. The WSI also indicates a transition from low to moderate/high water stress after 2065, especially under RCP4.5. These findings highlight the urgency for adaptive water management and planning in Andean cities reliant on surface water.

Hydrological Drought Modeling Under the Impact of Climate Change in the Luanhe River Basin: A Prediction Study

Against the backdrop of climate change and compounded by human activities, increasing water scarcity has triggered a series of drought disasters, which have already severely impacted both ecological environments and socioeconomic production. The SWAT model, recognized for its strong portability and superior spatial het...

The Effects of Climate Change on Meteorological and Hydrological Drought in the Harşit River Basin (Türkiye)

Climate change necessitates basin scale assessments in vulnerable countries such as Türkiye due to its impacts on water resources and drought patterns. In this study, precipitation and runoff data up to the year 2100 were analyzed in the Harşit River Basin, one of the subbasins of the Eastern Black Sea Basin, to identi...

Climate and Human Impacts on Semi-Arid River Water Quality

Water quality degradation in river ecosystems is a growing global challenge, driven by both anthropogenic activities and climate change. The Kashafroud River in northeastern Iran is a critical water source for nearly two million people, yet it faces mounting pressures from rising temperatures (~1.5 °C over the past thr...

Impacts of climate change on blue and green waters in Tekeze-Atbara watershed, Nile basin

This study examines the impacts of climate change on blue water flow (BWF), green water storage (GWS), and green water flow (GWF) components of water resources in the Tekeze Atbara watershed of the Nile basin. It employed five CMIP5 climate models under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios along with a satisfactory SWAT model w...

Evaluation of the climate change impacts and Floodplain restoration   in the Kelani River basin, Sri Lanka: a hydraulic modelling approach

The Kelani River basin (KRB) is the highest flooding conditions appeared river basin in Sri Lanka. Based on this, the study investigates the impact of climate resilience on rainfall patterns, temperature, wind speed, and streamflow dynamics of the Kelani River basin in Sri Lanka to enhance flood risk prediction and flo...

Assessing Current Patterns and Impacts of Climate Change on Water Resources in Leh-Ladakh

Climate change and global warming have significantly impacted the water cycle and water resources in the Himalayan region. This study focused on the effects of climate change and human intervention on water resources in the Ladakh region over the past decades. Changes in snowfall and glacial patterns, rapid runoff, and...
