Abstract

Effective endangered plant conservation and recovery require empirical knowledge of seed dormancy release and responses to post-collection handling, yet such information is lacking for many rare taxa. Physaria thamnophila (Zapata bladderpod; Brassicaceae), a critically imperilled (G1) species endemic to southern Texas, USA, is poorly studied, and basic questions regarding seed storage and germination remain unresolved. We evaluated the effects of short-term cool-storage duration (14–180 d), storage temperature (refrigeration vs. freezing), dry after-ripening and maternal plant identity on germination probability and timing in P. thamnophila . Dry after-ripening and increased cool-storage duration consistently increased germination and shortened germination time, whereas storage temperature had comparatively weak effects. Germination probability increased from 45% in seeds planted directly from cool storage to 74% following dry after-ripening, and mean germination time was reduced by approximately 3 d. Seeds held in cool storage for longer durations germinated more rapidly and at higher percentages, indicating progressive dormancy release during storage. Maternal plant identity explained substantial variation in both germination probability and timing. Freezer storage resulted in only a marginal reduction in germination probability and did not affect germination timing, suggesting short-term freezing tolerance. P. thamnophila seeds exhibit physiological dormancy, retain viability for at least 210 d under short-term post-collection conditions and are likely tolerant of freezing. This study provides practical guidance for managing limited seed collections and conservation and recovery of P. thamnophila , as well as new, ecologically relevant information that increases our understanding of how this species is adapted to episodic rainfall in its habitat.

Humidity and temperature interact in breaking physical dormancy in Fabaceae seeds from the Brazilian semiarid region

Abstract Premise In semiarid ecosystems such as the Brazilian Caatinga, physical seed dormancy (PY) is critical for plant persistence when water is unpredictable, but how soil moisture and temperature regulate PY release and seed longevity in species of native Fabaceae that have different growth forms is unknown. Metho...

Seed maturation, germination physiology, and storage behaviour of the tropical tree Cochlospermum religiosum (L.) Alston (Bixaceae)

Seeds exhibited a rapid triphasic imbibition pattern, indicating substantial water permeability under freshly harvested conditions, although the possibility of partial physical dormancy developing during drying and storage cannot be completely excluded.

Effects of Pre-Germination Treatments on Seed Germination of Pachypodium mikea Lüthy, an Endemic Xerophytic Species from Southwestern Madagascar

Pachypodium mikea Lüthy (Apocynaceae) is a xerophytic species endemic to southwestern Madagascar whose germination ecology remains poorly documented. This study aimed to characterize its seeds and evaluate the effects of different pre-germination treatments under nursery conditions. A total of 400 seeds were subjected...

Seeding paradise: germination ecophysiology of Xyris paradisiaca Wand. (Xyridaceae), an endangered endemic species from Central Brazil

Seed ecophysiology is essential for understanding plant regeneration and developing effective conservation and ecological restoration strategies, yet knowledge remains scarce for most threatened Cerrado species. We characterised the germination niche, desiccation tolerance and storage behaviour of Xyris paradisiaca (Xy...

Seed cryopreservation of Corymbia citriodora: effects of cryoprotective treatments on seed vigor and germination

Efficient ex situ conservation of forest genetic resources depends on protocols that preserve seed viability during ultra-low-temperature storage. This study evaluated the effects of cryoprotective solutions on the germination and vigor of Corymbia citriodora (Hook.) K.D. Hill & L.A.S. Johnson seeds after storage in li...

Optimizing germination in oldman saltbush ( Atriplex nummularia ): understanding seed traits and identifying abiotic limits

Oldman saltbush ( Atriplex nummularia Lindl.) is an Australian woody shrub valued for livestock forage and shelter in saline, hot and semi-arid environments. Adoption is constrained by reliance on nursery-grown seedlings, as direct seeding remains unreliable. Despite its agricultural importance, quantitative data...
