Abstract

A woman in her 40s presented with painful nodules and ulceration over the medial aspect of her left foot, following a thorn prick while walking barefoot. Initial treatment with antibiotics and intralesional corticosteroid injection was unsuccessful. Dermoscopy revealed a bright red to yellow structureless area with thick whitish structures at the periphery. The tissue specimen obtained from the lesion and submitted for histopathology revealed granulomatous inflammation and mycobacterial culture revealed Mycobacterium abscessus on Lowenstein–Jensen medium and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry. She was treated with oral clarithromycin and minocycline for 12 weeks with complete resolution. This case highlights the prevalence of infections in tropical regions and the challenges and delays in their early recognition and management; hence, a proper diagnostic approach is required for treating physicians.

Possible correlation between Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. massiliense spondylodiscitis and spinal anesthesia: Diagnostic and therapeutic challenges

ABSTRACT Spinal infections caused by Mycobacterium abscessus are rare and difficult to treat. We report the first case of M. abscessus subsp. massiliense spondylodiscitis temporally associated with spinal anesthesia. A 57-year-old man developed back pain after undergoing spinal anesthesia for prostate surgery. Six mont...

A case report of diffuse intra-abscess hemorrhage in Listeria monocytogenes rhombencephalitis and its implications for early diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring

We report a 74-year-old female presenting with fever, right eyelid ptosis, and peripheral facial palsy following dental treatment, who was initially misdiagnosed as acute brainstem infarction based on MRI showing T2-hyperintense signal in the right pons with restricted diffusion. Despite dual antiplatelet therapy and e...
