Women's Liberation in the Vision of Mahamana Malaviya: A Synthesis of Sanatan and Modern Discourses
Abstract
In contemporary feminist discourse, the concept of 'women's liberation' is primarily viewed through the lens of Western rights, individual autonomy, and gender equality. In contrast, Indian cultural thought and Sanatan consciousness hold a long-standing tradition of analyzing women as active co-creators (relationality) of the family, society, and broader public life. Current academic discourse often resorts to the historical oversimplification of labeling Indian tradition as orthodox and Western feminism as anti-family. Avoiding this ideological extremism, the present research article conducts a comparative and critical study of the perspective on women held by Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya. Based on historical-explanatory and qualitative text analysis methods, this study reveals how Malaviya ji, during colonial India, constructed a rational bridge between tradition and modern rights through his advocacy for women's education, vocal opposition to social evils, and support for women's suffrage. In conclusion, based on the text analysis of the historical documents of BHU and the original writings (primary sources) of Malaviya ji, this study reveals that the path to Indian women's liberation in the 21st century lies not in the dichotomy of 'tradition versus modernity', but in an "Integrated Indian Women's Empowerment Paradigm" based on the balance of 'autonomy and relationality'. This research clarifies that Malaviya ji's educational and social reform initiatives are practical evidence of this synthesis, which provide legal dignity and social leadership to Indian women. Abstract in Hindi Language:
