Geochemical Evidence for Oxic Depositional Conditions in the Early Palaeogene Akli Formation, Barmer Basin, India

Abstract

Integrated stable carbon isotope and geochemical analyses of the Palaeocene–Eocene Akli Formation, exposed at the Sonari Lignite Mine in the Barmer Basin, western India, reveal predominantly oxidising depositional conditions, interrupted by short-term reducing phases associated with lignite-bearing intervals during the Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). δ13C values measured on bulk organic matter range from −21.3 to −29.0‰ and exhibit a distinct negative excursion of ~5‰, co-occurring with low total organic carbon (TOC < 2%), together recording the local geochemical expression of the PETM. PAAS-normalised rare earth element (REE) patterns show enrichment of light REEs and a moderate negative europium anomaly (Eu/Eu* = 0.60–0.87), consistent with derivation from upper continental crustal sources. Redox-sensitive trace-element ratios—V/Cr (< 2), Ni/Co (< 5), and Th/U (> 2)—fall within ranges characteristic of oxic depositional conditions. Immobile element provenance indices (Th/Sc, La/Sc, Cr/Th) indicate a mixed felsic–mafic sediment source derived from the Precambrian Indian Craton and Deccan Trap basalts. Collectively, these proxies indicate deposition in a shallow-marine, regressive, predominantly oxygenated setting, punctuated by short-lived reducing conditions recorded within lignite-bearing horizons. The Akli Formation thus constitutes one of the few tropical records of PETM-age oxidation and provenance variability from the Indian subcontinent.

Geochemistry of low‐temperature dolomite formation in coastal and continental saline to sabkha‐like environments

Early diagenetic dolomite forms at low temperatures (<50°C) in settings where relative contributions of microbial influences and pore‐fluid chemistry are difficult to separate. Here, dolomite and associated aragonite, calcite and Mg‐calcite from modern and ancient coastal and continental settings in Spain, Australia an...

Carbon isotope geochemistry of organic matter in volcanic paleosols constrains paleo‐environmental variations

The Fiorano quarry paleosol developed within the Colli Albani volcanic district (Italy) in the time interval bracketed by the deposition of the Pozzolanelle pyroclastic‐flow unit (365 ± 4 ka) and the emplacement of the Capo di Bove lava flow (277 ± 2 ka). The paleosol is characterized by an accretionary feature pro...

Duricrust Diagenesis in the Kalahari Basin With Implications for Mineral Recycling and the Long-Term Resilience of Cratonic Landscapes

Duricrusts cover more than 10% of Earth’s land surface. They armor cratonic landscapes and retard erosion, yet the diagenetic processes governing their internal evolution remain incompletely understood. We present an integrated micro-analytical study of duricrust diagenesis in the Kalahari Basin, southern Africa, combi...

Metallogenesis of the Late Carboniferous Karst Bauxite in the North China Craton: A Review

The metallogenesis of the Late Carboniferous karst bauxite of the Benxi Formation in the North China Craton has long been debated, particularly regarding the relative roles of in situ weathering and residual accumulation of the underlying carbonate rocks, allochthonous Al-rich materials input, paleokarst geomorphologic...

Neoproterozoic uranium-mineralized sedimentary rocks from the Kaladgi Basin, Dharwar Craton, southwestern India: source and transport mechanism of uranium

The Kaladgi Basin of the Dharwar Craton, southeast India, hosts Proterozoic unconformity-related uranium (U) mineralization controlled by faulted contacts between Archean basement and Proterozoic cover sediments. To understand the ore-forming processes, 25 core samples from the Cave Temple Arenite were analyzed using w...
