Abstract

What is already known about this topic? Melioidosis, caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei (B. pseudomallei), is endemic in tropical coastal regions. What is added by this report? This report describes a fatal imported case of sequence type 55 (ST55) melioidosis from Hainan Province. The patient developed sepsis and multiple organ failure and died within 2 days after admission; the diagnosis was confirmed only after death. What are the implications for public health practice? Clinicians in nonendemic areas should consider melioidosis in febrile travelers, obtain a thorough travel history, and use rapid polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnostics. Strengthening clinical awareness and laboratory capacity is essential for early detection and improved outcomes.
