Compared ovarian gene expression between non-hormonally stimulated seasonally quiescent mares and mares showing ovarian activation following cloprostenol and eCG treatment during the same seasonal anestrous period shows transcriptional differences that may reflect both ovarian functional responses and direct or indirect effects of hormonal treatment.
Abstract
Simple Summary Kazakh horses are typical seasonal breeders, and their reproductive activity is strongly influenced by seasonal environmental changes. During the non-breeding season, ovarian activity is markedly reduced. Hormonal treatment can induce an ovarian response during this period, but the associated early molecular changes remain incompletely understood. In this study, we compared ovarian gene expression between non-hormonally stimulated seasonally quiescent mares and mares showing ovarian activation following cloprostenol and eCG treatment during the same seasonal anestrous period. Numerous differentially expressed genes were associated with immune regulation, metabolic processes, and reproductive functions. C1QB, CREB5, and IRS1 were highlighted as transcriptomic candidate genes based on their differential expression and association with relevant biological pathways; however, their functional roles were not tested in this study. Importantly, the hormonally induced group does not represent the natural transition to breeding-season reproductive activity or a stable natural estrous state. The observed transcriptional differences may therefore reflect both ovarian functional responses and direct or indirect effects of hormonal treatment. These findings should be considered a basis for further hypothesis-driven studies rather than evidence of specific molecular mechanisms controlling natural seasonal reproduction.
Simple Summary Seasonal breeding restricts lamb production in many parts of the world, limiting the profitability and flexibility of sheep farming. Small Tail Han sheep, a Chinese breed that reproduces year-round, provide a valuable opportunity to understand how the ovary controls continuous cycling. In this study, we...

Background: The pronounced broodiness of Wanxi white geese is associated with rapid ovarian regression and reduced egg production and reproductive efficiency. However, the extent to which circRNAs influence this physiological transition by coordinating ceRNA interactions is not yet well understood. Methods: Here, we ge...

Background: Meiosis is an important process involved in gamete formation and maintenance of genetic variation in mammals. In bovines, meiosis-specific genes regulate chromosome pairing, synapsis, recombination and segregation during germ cell development. Spermatogenesis in the testis occurs continuously and involves a...

Anti-Müllerian hormone (Amh) is a key regulator of sex determination and differentiation in fish. In this study, we identified and characterized a single-copy Amh ortholog, designated CmAmh, in blotched snakehead (Channa maculata), an economically important species in China. The cDNA spans 2340 bp and encodes a 545-ami...

Steroid hormones regulate ovarian development, but hsd3b7 function in fish remains unclear. In this study, we cloned full-length hsd3b7 cDNA from Qihe gibel carp (Carassius gibelio var. Qihe) and generated a polyclonal antibody. Real-time PCR, Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry revealed widespread hsd3b7 expres...
