Abstract

The mangrove ecosystem in the coastal area of Pasekan Subdistrict, Indramayu Regency, is experiencing environmental pressure due to coastal abrasion and land-use conversion, which affect vegetation density. This study aims to analyze changes in mangrove density during 2015–2025 using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) method based on Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 imagery. The analysis included image preprocessing, NDVI calculation, density classification, and spatial change analysis. The results showed that mangrove density area decreased by 29.2293 ha (9.38%), from 311.7671 ha in 2015 to 282.5378 ha in 2025. The decline mainly occurred in the very high-density class due to coastal abrasion and land conversion into ponds and settlements. Meanwhile, the increase in low to medium-density classes indicates mangrove regeneration and rehabilitation in several locations. In addition, Sentinel-2 imagery provided better spatial detail than Landsat 8 for mangrove density identification. Keywords: Mangrove density; Landsat 8; NDVI; Sentinel

Spatial Dynamics and Vegetation Densification of Mangroves in Ambon Bay Derived from NDVI–NDMI Analysis

Mangrove ecosystems perform critical ecological functions in tropical coastal zones. Globally, these ecosystems have experienced significant areal decline, underscoring the urgency of systematic spatiotemporal monitoring. This study quantified changes in mangrove coverage across Teluk Ambon, Maluku Province, over a nin...

Analysis of land cover and degradation using multi-index remote sensing from 1994 to 2024: The case of Gijduvan district, Uzbekistan

This study analyses land cover changes and ecological transformations in the Gijduvan District of the Republic of Uzbekistan over the period 1994–2024. For this purpose, summer-season satellite imagery and eleven remote sensing indices—NDVI, NDWI, SI, IBI, NDBSI, LST, DVI, RVI, SAVI, BSI, and NDMI—were used. These indi...

Mapping Mangrove Distribution in Muara Jenggalu, Bengkulu City Using Sentinel 2A-Imagery and OBIA

Mangroves are coastal ecosystems that play a vital role in maintaining coastal stability, providing habitat for diverse biota, and reducing the impacts of climate change. However, these ecosystems continue to face threats, including in Muara Jenggalu, Bengkulu City. This study aims to map the spatial distribution of ma...
