Abstract
The warm, swift Gulf Stream (GS) plays a key role in shaping weather and climate patterns across the North Atlantic. Using 31‐year (1993–2023) of continuous satellite altimeter observations, we identify a pronounced intensification of the free‐flowing GS after its separation from the coast beginning around 2014 and persisting thereafter, following a prolonged period (2005–2014) of weaker transport. This intensification coincides with a northward displacement and reduced meandering of the GS path, which appears to be linked to a spin‐up of the North Atlantic subtropical gyre. This gyre acceleration is largely driven by an increase in the negative wind stress curl, partially modulated by the two leading modes of atmospheric variability in the region: the North Atlantic Oscillation and the East Atlantic Pattern. Our analysis also suggests that GS intensification may have a local air–sea feedback leading to anomalous wind stress curl.
Understanding the low‐frequency variability of the western boundary current (WBC) is essential for the redistribution of heat, salt and energy in the South China Sea (SCS). Long‐term acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) mooring observations show a strengthening trend in the winter SCS WBC from 2014 to 2024. Diagn...

The mid‐tropospheric winter North Pacific storm track (NPST) underwent an interdecadal transition from weak to strong in the mid‐1980s and exhibited a significant intensification trend. Using climate model outputs, this study investigates the contributions of external forcing and internal variability to the NPST intens...
In August 2022, the South Asian High (SAH) deviated from its typical northwest–southeast displacement pattern and exhibited a record‐breaking northeastward shift over the period 1980–2024. Accompanying this displacement, a deep and persistent high‐pressure centre developed over mid‐latitude East Asia, directly leadin...

Upwelling along southwest Greenland plays an important role in modulating shelf‐basin exchange and influencing deep convection in the Labrador Sea. Here we investigate its seasonal and interannual variability using the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program West Greenland mooring observations and atmosphe...

Significance The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a major regulator of global climate, is weakening under ongoing warming, yet its far-field impacts remain uncertain. Past AMOC slowdown events during the last glacial period provide insights into how such changes propagate beyond the North Atlantic. B...

As a gateway between the Arctic and subtropics, the subpolar North Atlantic plays a key role in large‐scale climate variability. In recent decades, the region has experienced pronounced freshening. While much attention has been paid to the expected long‐term weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation,...
