TL;DR
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is an accessible, dynamic, and radiation-free imaging modality that complements conventional radiography in the evaluation of hip osteoarthritis and constitutes a valuable educational and clinical tool for improving the recognition of ultrasonographic findings and strengthening training in musculoskeletal ultrasound.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Hip osteoarthritis is one of the leading causes of pain and functional impairment in adults. Although conventional radiography remains the initial diagnostic method, its correlation with clinical symptoms is limited, and it may appear normal or inconclusive in the early stages. In this context, musculoskeletal ultrasound represents a useful complementary tool for assessing periarticular structures involved in pain generation.
Objective
To describe and illustrate the characteristic ultrasound findings of hip osteoarthritis in patients presenting with hip pain.
Methods
A descriptive study based on the retrospective review of hip ultrasound images stored in the digital database of Instituto Lena Pari. Adult patients evaluated for hip pain with a clinical and/or radiographic diagnosis of osteoarthritis were included. The images were classified according to the affected anatomical structure and the corresponding ultrasound scanning plane.
Results
The selected images demonstrated the ability of ultrasound to identify structural abnormalities and periarticular inflammatory changes associated with hip osteoarthritis, including joint effusion, synovitis, superficial osteophytes, bursitis, and tendinopathies. Anatomical and ultrasonographic correlation allowed the identification of visual patterns useful for both clinical practice and medical education.
Conclusions
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is an accessible, dynamic, and radiation-free imaging modality that complements conventional radiography in the evaluation of hip osteoarthritis. The atlas developed constitutes a valuable educational and clinical tool for improving the recognition of ultrasonographic findings and strengthening training in musculoskeletal ultrasound.
USG provides improved detection of osteophytes and offers additional information on soft-tissue and early structural changes in knee OA and serves as a valuable, accessible adjunct to conventional radiography for comprehensive evaluation and early diagnosis of knee OA.

Background Calcific tendinopathy can be difficult to diagnose and manage from a traditional, non-invasive physical therapy perspective. However, there is preliminary evidence supporting the use of diagnostic ultrasound and dry needling interventions to evaluate and treat the pain and disability associated with this chr...

Subcoracoid impingement (SCI) is one of the possible causes in anterior shoulder pain that can be misdiagnosed or missed. It results from a conflict between the coracoid process and the lesser tuberosity of the humeral head. The collision mainly affects the subscapularis tendon that is at risk of degeneration and teari...
