A Quantitative Study on Gender Role Attitude Among the Youth
Abstract
The research assesses the transition from traditional to egalitarian gender roles and contributes to the understanding of gender attitude in the current socio- cultural context. This hallmark identity of the youth is investigated on a sample of 100 youth within the age range 18- 26, residing in Kolkata, using the Gender Roles Attitude Scale (GRAS). The data was analysed using independent samples t-tests across five dimensions: Egalitarian, Female, Marriage, Traditional, and Male gender roles. The study investigates the areas of gender roles that are reaching a consensus and the others that remain highly polarized by gender. Statistical analysis indicates that the youth sample generally rejects traditional norms, such as male-domination in a household or gender-segregated professions. It can be concluded that education and economic independence are primary drivers in reshaping these attitudes thus supporting a shift towards a more equitable social framework. The study also discusses the implications of these attitudes for professional development and domestic equity.
