Abstract

Life is a ceaseless flow. It holds joy and sorrow; it encompasses love and separation; it features laughter and tears. It is, in essence, replete with a myriad of such emotions. From the various vicissitudes and trials of life, individual stories are born. What truly matters is how one chooses to perceive this existence. The perspective of the veteran litterateur Sanjib Chattopadhyay is entirely distinct. He presents even the most complex issues wrapped in the garb of humour. Be it marital dynamics or bureaucratic red tape — whether the subject is romance or corruption — his mode of presentation displays a remarkable mastery. At times he appears indignant, at others defiant; yet, his style of expression invariably leans toward satire. He employs novel metaphors and unique diction, creating a distinct impact on the reader's mind. Simultaneously, he unveils the contours of social evolution. Amidst the refreshing openness of dialogue and exposition, he reveals entirely new horizons of thought. One is left to marvel: can events witnessed right before one's eyes be interpreted in such a manner? A simultaneous wave of wonder and deep admiration washes over the reader's mind. The present essay attempts to analyze this novel style of expression by drawing upon examples and metaphors from several of his stories.
