Abstract
Postpolymerization modification of polyolefins enables direct introduction of functionality into high-volume, low-cost commodity materials, affording access to functional materials that are otherwise challenging to synthesize directly from monomers. However, traditional postpolymerization modification strategies result in randomly distributed functionalization along the polyolefin backbone, which can disrupt crystallinity and degrade the thermomechanical properties of the derived polymers. Crystallite-templated postpolymerization functionalization has recently emerged as a promising strategy to overcome these limitations, yet existing approaches often require specially prepared semicrystalline gels. Here, we report a swelling-assisted postpolymerization functionalization strategy that directly leverages the semicrystalline morphology of melt-processed polyolefins. In this process, the chemical reagents are selectively introduced to the amorphous phase of polymers for a targeted functionalization reaction at elevated temperatures. The resulting functionalized polyolefins largely retain the melting temperature and crystallinity of their unmodified counterparts across multiple grafting monomers, highlighting a practical and versatile platform for producing functional polyolefins with a preserved semicrystalline microstructure and bulk properties directly from commercial feedstocks.
Aromatic polymers are foundational to modern technologies; yet, their robust chemical and physical properties make them notoriously difficult to chemically modify, limiting their sustainable utilization and the development of emerging plastics technologies. Here, we introduce a postpolymerization modification strateg...

The differences in molecular chain structure, polarity, and crystallinity among mixed polyolefins severely weaken interfacial adhesion in their blends, posing a critical barrier to the efficient upcycling of mixed waste polyolefin plastics. Herein, a solvent-free, one-pot reactive extrusion process is developed, whic...

Commercial polyolefin plastics are indispensable to modern society; however, their chemical inertness renders them environmentally persistent, thereby contributing to severe plastic pollution and ecological challenges. Accordingly, the development of commercially viable degradable materials with performance comparabl...

Plasticizers are small molecule additives compounded with polymers to tune their physical properties and facilitate processing, but plasticizers often leach from plastics, where they potentially have negative environmental and ecological consequences. Synthetic design can obviate the need for plasticizers by identify...

Mechanical recycling of mixed post-consumer apolar/polar polymers, due to their mis-matched polarity and inherent immiscibility, is typically a downcycling process yielding brittle materials. An emerging method that can enhance recycling of such mixtures into dynamically crosslinked, high-performance thermosets is a dy...
