Polyproline exists in two forms, the all-cis right-handed polyproline helix (type I) and the all-trans left-handed polyproline helix (type II). While the former is favored in common organic solvents, the latter is favored in aqueous solutions. Taking advantage of the hydrophilicity of type II polyproline, we prepared peptide-based nanostructures from a series of block copolymers of ε-caprolactone and l-proline. Copolymers were synthesized via N-carboxyanhydride polymerization in DMF using amino-ended polycaprolactone as initiator and covering a broad range of polyproline compositions. By simple stirring in water, the cis–trans isomerization of polyproline triggered their solubilization, leading to the spontaneous self-assembly of the copolymers into colloidally stable nanoparticles. Optical rotation measurements demonstrated the mutarotation of prolyl residues and circular dichroism spectroscopy shed light on the preferential type II secondary structure of polyproline that stabilizes nanostructures. Nanodevices encapsulated doxorubicin hydrochloride, highlighting their potential as drug delivery systems.
We report the solvent-dependent self-assembly of 1-Py2, a novel bifuran-imide building block functionalized with terminal pyrene units and an enantiopure, alanine-derived chiral side chain. In pure tetrahydrofuran, 1-Py2 exists as a monomer with no electronic circular dichroism (ECD) signal. Increasing the water conten...

Single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) are synthetic macromolecules that undergo intramolecular collapse to form protein-sized structures (5–20 nm), making them attractive as protein mimics whose peptide backbone is expected to confer susceptibility to enzymatic and hydrolytic degradation. While most reported SCNPs rely...

Self-immolative polymers (SIPs) constitute a sophisticated class of stimuli-responsive materials capable of undergoing complete end-to-end depolymerization upon a single triggering event. Among the various SIP architectures, quinone-methide (QM)-based poly(benzyl ether)s (PBEs) stand out owing to their high structural...

In recent years, considerable attention has been devoted to supramolecular architectures such as helical fibers, tubules, and nanotoroids (nanorings) owing to their unique physical properties. In this study, we synthesized a bipyridine-based Pt(II) complex bearing two chloride ions that act as a bidentate ligand. Int...
