METROLOGY IS LIFE ITSELF!

2025 · 150th anniversary of the Metre Convention — From Units to the Universe · 0 citations

Abstract

There is a common misunderstanding that metrology, literally defined as the science of measurement, is only used and applicable in laboratory activities and scientific research. However, it is actively involved in every aspect of our lives. We are often not aware enough of the continuous use of metrology in our daily lives. From the electronic devices used in our homes to the food we consume, from daily shopping to healthcare services - metrology is an integral part of our lives, one of its fundamental building blocks. From sports to trade, from construction to technology, accurate measurements in every field ensure that our lives continue safely and efficiently. Thanks to metrology, accurate measurements assure that everyone can live a healthy and high quality life. Despite all this, the concept of metrology, which in its modern sense will celebrate its 150th anniversary this year, is still not sufficiently recognized and known. Most of the time, it is not even recognized as a science. Awareness of metrology is far below the desired level due to reasons such as its complexity and technical terminology making it difficult for the public to understand, its specific courses not being common in schools or even universities, it being less noticeable compared to other popular branches of science such as physics, chemistry or biology, and its failure to reach a wide audience because it is generally addressed in specific industrial or engineering contexts. Not being known to the degree it deserves leads to a situation in which the public does not realize the value of metrology. Furthermore, the low recognition can lead to consequences such as a lack of adequate support and budget for critical research. With the poster I will make, I aim to draw attention to the place and effect of metrology in daily life and to highlight its invisible but very important role in our lives by starting from this problem and emphasizing the theme of “Measurements for all times, for all people” determined for World Metrology Day 2025. For this purpose, I plan to use slogan language, which is a more understandable communication method, and simple but striking visuals from real life, rather than technical language and images. I hope that, in addition to the poster's contribution to raising awareness on its own, it can be supported by activities such as social media initiatives, educational programs, open day activities, and practical workshops.
