Results demonstrate that TEPLPCC consistently surpasses baseline PLPCC and existing TEO-derived features (TELFCC and TEMFCC), achieving up to 13% relative improvement in mismatched conditions and approximately 10% higher recognition accuracy on average.

Abstract

Whispered speech poses persistent challenges for automatic speech recognition (ASR) owing to the absence of vocal fold vibration and the dominance of turbulent airflow excitation, which substantially alters spectral and temporal energy distributions. Conventional front-end features, such as Perceptual Linear Predictive Cepstral Coefficients (PLPCC), exhibit limited robustness in these conditions, particularly under cross-mode (mismatched) training–testing scenarios. To address this, we propose Teager Energy–based Perceptual Linear Predictive Cepstral Coefficients (TEPLPCC), a novel feature extraction framework that integrates the nonlinear Teager Energy Operator (TEO) within the perceptually motivated PLP analysis. The proposed method exploits instantaneous energy variations to characterize the nonlinear aerodynamic behavior inherent in whispered speech. Extensive experiments were conducted on the Whi-Spe bimodal (normal/whisper) speech database using three recognition back ends—Dynamic Time Warping (DTW), Hidden Markov Models (HMM), and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)—under both matched (Normal/Normal, Whisper/Whisper) and mismatched (Normal/Whisper, Whisper/Normal) conditions. Feature normalization via Cepstral Mean Subtraction (CMS) was employed to mitigate channel and mode variability. Results demonstrate that TEPLPCC consistently surpasses baseline PLPCC and existing TEO-derived features (TELFCC and TEMFCC), achieving up to 13% relative improvement in mismatched conditions and approximately 10% higher recognition accuracy on average. These outcomes establish TEPLPCC as a perceptually consistent and energy-aware representation, significantly advancing the robustness of ASR systems for whispered speech.

Spectro-temporal vs. spectral features to predict the lombard gain in Mandarin Chinese

Background In background noise, speakers adapt their speech production, giving rise to Lombard speech, which often improves speech intelligibility (SI). While intelligibility benefits of Lombard speech have been extensively studied in non-tonal languages, it remains unclear whether spectro-temporal cues, which are crit...

WhisperVC-AV: Audio-Visual Content Restoration for Noise-Robust Whisper-to-Normal Voice Conversion

Environmental noise obscures the content cues needed for whisper-to-normal conversion. We propose WhisperVC-AV, which restores acoustic content features while leaving the original WhisperVC conversion module unchanged. Its context-guided restoration module combines temporal acoustic context with synchronized lip featur...

Targeted Cepstral Jitter Modeling Using Lightweight Neural Networks for Real-time Auditory Feedback Modulation

Abstract Real-time auditory feedback modulation requires signal representations that allow perceptually effective voicequality control under strict latency constraints. This work investigates a cepstrum-based approach to modulating perceived vocal roughness, a central aspect of hoarseness, in sustained vowels. The prop...

A Temporal-Envelope Frontend with Learnable Per-Channel Energy Normalization for Whisper-Based Children's ASR

Temporal envelopes carry cues critical to speech intelligibility, yet ASR frontends based on log-mel spectrograms do not explicitly model continuous sub-band envelope structure. This limitation is particularly acute for children's speech, where high acoustic variability demands robust feature representations. We propos...

Wavelet Scattering Features for Robust Subject-Independent EMG-Based Speech Recognition: A Comparative Analysis

Electromyography (EMG)-based speech recognition provides a non-acoustic alternative in high-noise environments and serves as a prospective foundation for assistive technologies for users with speech impairments.
