Machine-Readable Malayalam Dictionaries and Lexical Databases
Abstract
The rapid growth of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and language technologies has increased the importance of structured lexical resources for Indian languages. Malayalam, a morphologically rich Dravidian language spoken predominantly in Kerala, presents unique challenges and opportunities in computational linguistics. Among the foundational resources required for language technology development are Machine-Readable Dictionaries (MRDs) and Lexical Databases. This article examines the development, structure, significance, and applications of machine-readable Malayalam dictionaries and lexical databases. It discusses the evolution of Malayalam computational lexicography, major projects and initiatives, linguistic challenges, and the role of lexical resources in language processing systems. The study also highlights the relationship between traditional lexicography and computational approaches and demonstrates how digital tools build upon centuries of traditional Malayalam scholarship.
