Optimizing Thermal Efficiency in Compact Heat Exchangers in Nigeria: A Review of Design Strategies and Performance Enhancement Techniques
Abstract
Heat exchangers play a critical role in industrial processes by enabling the efficient transfer of thermal energy between fluids without direct mixing, thereby enhancing energy utilization, process efficiency, and sustainability. This study presents a comprehensive review of design strategies and performance enhancement techniques for optimizing thermal efficiency in compact heat exchangers, with particular emphasis on applications within Nigerian industries. Compact heat exchangers, characterized by high surface area-to-volume ratios, offer superior heat transfer performance, reduced size, and improved operational efficiency, making them suitable for sectors such as oil and gas, power generation, manufacturing, and HVAC systems. The review examines various classifications of heat exchangers, including their flow arrangements and construction types, and highlights the growing demand for compact designs to address energy efficiency challenges. Key design strategies such as geometric optimization, flow configuration, surface modification, and the use of computational tools like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and genetic algorithms are discussed as essential approaches for improving thermal-hydraulic performance. Additionally, performance enhancement techniques including the application of nanofluids, phase change materials, advanced surface coatings, and turbulence-promoting structures are analyzed for their effectiveness in increasing heat transfer rates. Furthermore, the integration of advanced materials and emerging technologies is highlighted as a pathway to achieving enhanced efficiency and sustainability. Lastly, the study underscores the importance of optimizing compact heat exchangers to reduce energy consumption, lower operational costs, and improve industrial productivity.
