TL;DR

The main converse recovers the phase transition of the optimal Type II error under the exponentially decaying Type I error constraint $\varepsilon_n=e^{-nr}$.

Abstract

We study asymmetric simple binary hypothesis testing between $H_0:P_0^{n}$ and $H_1:P_1^{n}$, based on $n$ independent and identically distributed observations. Leveraging a variational representation of R\'enyi divergence of order $\alpha$, we derive our main result: a finite-sample converse with $\alpha>1$. The bound uses both directions of the divergence $D_\alpha(P_1\|P_0)$ and $D_\alpha(P_0\|P_1)$, tensorises under product measures, and contains familiar data-processing converses as boundary cases. For comparison, we apply the same variational approach to general $f$-divergences and specialise it to total variation, $E_\gamma$, Hellinger, and Kullback Leibler divergences, thereby recovering familiar converses within a unified framework. Together with an achievability bound involving R\'enyi divergence with $\alpha\in (0,1)$, the main converse recovers the phase transition of the optimal Type II error under the exponentially decaying Type I error constraint $\varepsilon_n=e^{-nr}$. Under regularity conditions, the optimal Type II error vanishes exponentially when $rD(P_1\|P_0)$. We also derive sample-complexity bounds and extend both the converse and achievability analyses to locally differentially private observations, quantifying the cost of privacy and recovering the non-private achievability bound as the privacy constraint vanishes.

Central limit theorem in R\'enyi divergence for lattice random variables

We establish a central limit theorem in R\'enyi divergence for independent and identically distributed lattice random variables $X_1, \cdots, X_n$ with zero mean, unit variance, and maximal span $h>0$. Let $S_n=(X_1+\cdots+X_n)/\sqrt n$. Let $Z_n$ denote the standard Gaussian distribution quantized on the support latti...

Finite-sample nonparametric mean tests: Leave-one-out duality and asymptotic optimality

We study finite-sample valid tests of the one-sided mean hypothesis $H_0:\mu\leq 1$ against $H_1:\mu>1$ for nonnegative random variables. To do so, we develop a leave-one-out dual certificate framework, where certain pointwise inequalities imply p-value validity under the conditional mean null $\mathbb{E}[X_i\mid\mathb...

Contraction of R\'enyi Divergences for Discrete Channels

We investigate Strong Data-Processing Inequality (SDPI) constants for R\'enyi Divergences on finite spaces. We study their dependence on the R\'enyi order $\alpha$, proving that they are non-decreasing and that their scaling by $(\alpha-1)$ is convex for $\alpha\geq1$. We also identify several support restrictions on t...

Asymptotically Lossless Exact and Pivotal E-Values

Consider testing a finite composite null $\cP={P_1,\ldots,P_L}$ against a simple alternative $Q$ using $n$ i.i.d. observations. Let $\ell_n$ denote the supremum of the expected log e-value over e-variables that are exact under every $P_i$ and pivotal across the nulls. Zhang, Ramdas, and Wang (2024) showed that $\ell_n$...

Discrete total variation under the multinomial, Part~1: expectation under the uniform null

We study the expectation of the discrete total variation statistic $d=\sum_{i=1}^{n-1}|X_{i+1}-X_i|$ of counts $X_1,\dots,X_n$ over $n$ ordered bins with sample size $N$, under the uniform multinomial null. In the notation used throughout the series, a reference distribution $\mathbf r$ defines $d_{\mathbf r}(x)=\|x-N\...

On Privacy Mechanism Design Under a Bounded $\alpha$-Lift Leakage Constraint with $\chi^2$-Utility

We study the design of a statistical privacy mechanism under a bounded $\alpha$-lift leakage constraint. An agent observes useful data $Y$, which is arbitrarily correlated with private data $X$, and releases $U$. The goal is to maximize Pearson $\chi^2$-information $\chi^2(Y;U)$ while satisfying the point-wise privacy...
