2025 · Nano Plus Science and Technology of Nanomaterials · 0 citations

Abstract

Access to clean and potable water is a fundamental necessity for human well-being, yet it remains a challenge in many regions worldwide. Conventional water treatment methods often face limitations in addressing microbial contamination and the need for sustainable and efficient purification processes. Nanotechnology, a multidisciplinary field dealing with materials and structures at the nanoscale, has emerged as a game-changer in the quest for efficient and sustainable drinking water purification. Nanotechnology leverages the unique properties of nanomaterials to revolutionize the removal of contaminants, prevention of biofilm formation, and overall improvement of water quality. It has ushered in a new era of water treatment by encapsulating the versatility of     nanoparticles, nanotubes, and other nanomaterials. This surpasses the limitations of conventional techniques with low costs and relatively limited adverse effects on the environment and human health. This review will explore the transformative impact of nanotechnology on enhancing water treatment efficiency, with a specific focus on its application in drinking water purification. It will delve into the fundamental principles of nanotechnology, elucidating the exceptional properties of nanomaterials and their role in improving water quality. It will unfold various challenges faced in conventional water treatment and    explain how nanotechnology offers innovative solutions to mitigate these issues. Environmental and safety considerations associated with using nanomaterials in drinking water treatment will be critically evaluated. Lastly, the challenges of nanotechnology and its prospects in drinking water purification will be reviewed.
