Assessment of Hydrogen Energy Application and Utilisation in Nigeria's Emerging Energy Landscape
Abstract
Hydrogen energy is emerging as a key component in the global effort to decarbonise. Experts project that by the year 2050, hydrogen could fulfil as much as 18% of the world’s total energy demand. This clean fuel source holds the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, bolster energy security, and support the transition to a sustainable energy future. As industries and nations seek innovative ways to transition away from fossil fuels, hydrogen energy stands out as a promising solution with the power to transform global energy landscapes. Nigeria, endowed with abundant renewable energy resources such as solar and biomass, as well as significant reserves of natural gas, holds a strategic advantage for the production of both green and blue hydrogen. This paper delves into a comprehensive assessment of Nigeria’s hydrogen potential, exploring various production technologies that could be harnessed to generate hydrogen sustainably. Additionally, it evaluates the current infrastructure readiness necessary for hydrogen production, storage, and distribution, while also examining the existing policy landscape that could facilitate or hinder the hydrogen economy's development. Through this analysis, we aim to highlight the opportunities and challenges that Nigeria faces in becoming a key player in the global hydrogen market. The study highlights the crucial role of hydrogen in facilitating the transition of industries towards decarbonization, providing reliable off-grid power solutions, and promoting sustainable transportation. While there are significant challenges to overcome, including existing regulatory gaps, targeted strategic investments, groundbreaking innovations, and robust public-private partnerships have the potential to elevate Nigeria into a prominent position within the burgeoning global hydrogen economy.
