Exploring EFL Students' Perspectives Using Canva AI (Magic Write) Assisted Writing in Paragraph Writing Class
Abstract
The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has opened new opportunities to support the writing development of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. Canva AI (Magic Write) feature is one of many AI-assisted writing tools that has garnered attention for helping generate ideas and develop text. This study explored EFL students’ perspectives of using Canva AI (Magic Write) feature as a digital-assisted writing tool in the paragraph writing class. The study was qualitative descriptive research design that was conducted on 26 students of the second semester of the English Language Education Study Program of Universitas PGRI Ronggolawe Tuban in the academic year of 2025/2026. Data were collected through classroom observations, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings showed that students’ attitudes towards Canva AI (Magic Write) were positive in general. They said the tool helped them generate ideas, organize paragraphs and develop vocabulary, creativity and writing confidence. Participants encountered irrelevant responses from AI, unfamiliar vocabulary, intermittent internet connections, and concerns about overdependence on AI. But they reviewed and edited the generated content critically to include in their own writing.
