Comprehensive Perspectives on Nanoparticles: From Fundamentals to Frontiers
Abstract
Nanoparticles have emerged as versatile materials with unique physicochemical characteristics that differ from their bulk counterparts, enabling their integration across scientific, industrial, and biomedical domains. This review provides a unified perspective on the classification, synthesis, characterization, and functional attributes that influence their behavior and utility. It outlines dimensional, compositional, and origin-based classification systems; compares conventional, green, top-down, and bottom-up synthesis strategies; and highlights key analytical tools, such as TEM, SEM, AFM, XRD, and spectroscopy, that underpin nanoparticle evaluation. This discussion extends to major application areas, including drug delivery, diagnostics, nanoelectronics, smart agriculture, and food technology, illustrating how nanotechnology enhances therapeutic precision, enables quantum-scale electronic components, improves crop productivity, and strengthens food quality and safety. Emerging trends, including biodegradable nanostructures, eco-friendly fabrication routes, and AI-driven material design, are examined alongside considerations of environmental and regulatory challenges. By integrating fundamental concepts with cross-disciplinary applications, this review underscores the transformative potential of nanoparticles while promoting responsible and suitable advancement of nanotechnology. The overall scope, structure, and key themes of this review are schematically summarized in the graphical abstract.
