Abstract

Objective. To investigate the possibility of using insulin as an adjunctive topical therapy for persistent epithelial defect (PED). Material and methods. The study was performed on 9 animals (18 eyes). After creating a PEC model, the clinical efficacy of topical insulin was assessed. The effect of 1 IU/ml insulin was compared with standard therapy, as well as with concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 IU/ml. Defect area was assessed using 3D geometric correction. Results. Insulin significantly accelerated epithelialization compared to the control (p<0.05). The 0.5 IU/ml concentration demonstrated the best therapeutic profile, ensuring complete reepithelialization by day 21 with zero variability, while increasing the dose did not improve outcomes. Conclusion. Adjunctive topical insulin significantly accelerates PEC healing.
