Global Strategic Management: Strategies for Navigating Challenges and Harnessing Opportunities in the International Expansion of Nigerian Manufacturing Firms
Abstract
The international expansion of Nigerian manufacturing firms presents both opportunities and challenges within the global market. This study explores the key factors influencing the global competitiveness of Nigerian manufacturers, focusing on market entry strategies, competitive advantages, and structural barriers. Despite Nigeria’s large domestic market and resource availability, firms struggle with limited access to finance, infrastructural deficits, regulatory hurdles, and stiff competition from established global players. The study employs a mixed methods approach, utilizing quantitative data from structured surveys and qualitative insights from interviews and case studies. Findings indicate that direct exporting is the most common market entry strategy, though joint ventures and foreign direct investments yield better long-term outcomes. Competitive positioning, branding, and strategic partnerships emerge as critical success factors in global expansion. However, firms face constraints such as trade finance limitations, high transportation costs, and difficulties in meeting international quality standards. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) provides an avenue for regional market integration, but Nigerian firms must improve production efficiency, technological adoption, and supply chain resilience to maximize these benefits. Policy recommendations include improving access to credit for SMEs, reducing regulatory bottlenecks, and fostering public-private collaborations to enhance industrial growth. Addressing these challenges is essential for Nigerian manufacturers to leverage global trade opportunities and contribute meaningfully to economic development.
