Abstract

This study explores the construction of sustainable citizenship grounded in the local wisdom of the Indigenous Community of Kampung Mahmud in Bandung Regency, West Java. The research is motivated by the growing need to strengthen sustainable citizenship to address contemporary social, cultural, and environmental challenges. As custodians of rich cultural traditions, indigenous communities possess local wisdom that promotes responsible citizenship through shared values, customary norms, collective participation, and intergenerational knowledge transmission. This study employed a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis involving traditional leaders, community elders, and local residents. The data were analyzed through an interactive process of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing to identify emerging themes and patterns. The findings indicate that the local wisdom of Kampung Mahmud embodies sustainable citizenship through five core values: religiosity, adherence to customary norms, deliberation, social solidarity, and intergenerational responsibility. These values are reflected in religious practices, customary traditions, collective decision-making, mutual cooperation, and the preservation of cultural heritage across generations. The study further identifies four interrelated dimensions of sustainable citizenship: religious sustainability, cultural sustainability, participatory sustainability, and intergenerational sustainability. Together, these dimensions constitute a locally grounded model of sustainable citizenship that reinforces community identity, social cohesion, and cultural resilience in the face of modernization. The findings advance citizenship education by demonstrating that indigenous local wisdom provides a meaningful foundation for fostering sustainable citizenship in contemporary society.
