Cyber Security of Smart Manufacturing According to the Industry 5.0 Model: Challenges, Solutions and Future Development Directions

2026 · SMART MANUFACTURING ON THE HORIZON: A Conceptual Shift from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0 · 0 citations

Abstract

As manufacturing increasingly embraces the digital transformation of Industry 4.0/5.0, the integration of advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and edge/cloud computing has led to the creation of highly interconnected and automated systems. Industry 5.0 emphasizes human-centered innovation, resilience and sustainability. In this advanced industrial paradigm, humans and intelligent machines work closely together, making cybersecurity not just a technical requirement, but a strategic necessity. While these advancements improve operational efficiency, flexibility and productivity, they also introduce significant cybersecurity challenges and risks. To mitigate these risks, it is critical to adopt robust cyber security strategies. This includes implementing practices like network segmentation, strong authentication mechanisms, encryption and regular pacth management. New technologies like AI-driven threat detection, blockchain for data integrity, and Zero Trust security models offer promising solutions. Additionally, adherence to industry standards such as ISO 27001 and IEC 62443 is critical to ensuring safe manufacturing operations. Real-world case studies highlight both the consequences of cyber security breaches and the success of proactive security measures. The future of cyber security in smart manufacturing lies in continuously adapting to new threats, integrating security throughout the entire product life cycle, and fostering collaboration between industries and sectors. In conclusion, cyber security is integral to the long-term success and resilience of smart manufacturing systems. As technology evolves, so must cybersecurity practices, ensuring that industries can take advantage of smart manufacturing without compromising security and reliability.
