Analysis Of The Relationship Between Occupational And Environmental Factors And The Level Of Work Fatigue Among Ship Crew

Sep 2026 · Journal Hygeia Public Health · 0 citations

Abstract

Introduction: Work fatigue among ship crew members may be influenced by work-related and environmental factors, potentially reducing productivity, safety, and workers' health. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between work-related and environmental factors and work fatigue among ship crew members in Sarawak, Malaysia. Method: The study employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design and involved 20 respondents selected using a non-probability sampling technique. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using Google Forms and measurements of environmental conditions, including noise intensity, temperature, and lighting. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with Spearman's rho correlation test at a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). Results and Discussion: The results showed a significant, strong, and positive relationship between work and environmental factors and the level of work fatigue (p = 0.000; r = 0.723). Higher workloads and poorer environmental conditions were associated with higher levels of fatigue among ship crew members. Conclusion: Workload control, improvements in the work environment, and stress management are needed to reduce fatigue and improve the occupational safety, health, and productivity of ship crew members.
