Abstract

In an environment where there is much interaction between different cultures around the world, animation films are becoming key vehicles for cross-cultural communication among all countries and territories. Cinematic subtitle's linguistic accuracy greatly affects how a culture is spread out, people's entertainment experience when watching movies as well as the movie’s artistic appearance. Culture-loaded terms are important linguistic units carrying rich historical, social and cultural connotations. They have long been a key and challenging research focus in film translation studies. In the animated movie Inside Out there is a large amount of representative Western psychological ideas, affective expression and cultural symbolic meaning which is very important for translation research. Taking the subtitling of this piece as the main research object of this dissertation, it carries out an in-depth study based on the theoretical foundation of functional equivalence theory and skopos theory. To find effective translation methods, the dissertation categorizes the research subjects into material culture, institutional culture, and spiritual culture for close textual analysis.
