Abstract

The world is facing unprecedented environmental challenges driven by climate change, rapid urbanization, increasing resource demands, biodiversity loss, and growing pressures on water and energy systems. Addressing these interconnected challenges requires integrated, multidisciplinary approaches that bridge scientific research, engineering innovation, environmental management, policy development, and stakeholder engagement. Recognizing the urgency of these issues, the 3rd International Conference on Water and Environment for Sustainability (ICWES 2026) was held from 7–9 April 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysia, in conjunction with ASIAWATER 2026, the region’s leading platform for water and wastewater solutions in developing Asia. The conference was organized by the University of Nottingham Malaysia under the theme “Water, Energy, Climate, and Sustainability: Charting the Future of Environmental Research.” ICWES 2026 provided an international forum for academics, researchers, engineers, industry leaders, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and discuss cutting-edge research and technological developments that contribute to sustainable development and environmental resilience. The conference aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, climate action, responsible consumption and production, and partnerships for sustainable development The conference theme highlights the critical nexus between water, energy, climate, and sustainability, emphasizing the need for holistic solutions to address emerging environmental challenges. Water remains fundamental to economic development, ecosystem health, food security, and human well-being, yet increasing pressures from population growth, pollution, and climate variability continue to threaten water security worldwide. At the same time, the global transition towards low-carbon energy systems requires technological innovations and sustainable resource management strategies that minimize environmental impacts while ensuring long-term resilience.
