Abstract

The banking sector remains a vital component of economic development through its role in financial intermediation, savings mobilisation, credit allocation, and payment facilitation. However, the operations of Deposit Money Banks are associated with various risks, including credit risk, liquidity risk, and operational risk, which can adversely affect profitability and long-term sustainability when inadequately managed. Despite continuous regulatory reforms and improvements in risk governance frameworks, Nigerian banks continue to encounter challenges such as deterioration in asset quality, increasing non-performing loans, operational inefficiencies, and unstable financial performance. This study examined the effect of risk management practices on the financial performance of listed Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. Specifically, the study evaluated the influence of key risk management dimensions, including credit risk management, liquidity risk management, and operational risk management, on bank performance. The study was anchored on Agency Theory, which emphasises the importance of effective monitoring mechanisms, accountability structures, and internal control systems in improving organisational outcomes. A quantitative research design was adopted, using panel data obtained from the audited annual reports and financial statements of selected listed Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. Financial performance was measured using Return on Assets (ROA), while risk management practices were represented by relevant risk indicators. The data were analysed using panel regression techniques to determine the relationship between risk management practices and financial performance. The findings revealed that risk management practices significantly influence the financial performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. The study established that effective management of banking risks contributes to improved profitability, operational resilience, and sustainable performance. Based on the findings, the study recommends that Nigerian Deposit Money Banks should continuously strengthen their risk management frameworks by improving credit evaluation procedures, enhancing liquidity monitoring mechanisms, and establishing effective operational risk control systems.
