Risk Management Practices in Commercial Banks
Abstract
Risk management has become an essential function in commercial banks due to increasing financial market uncertainty, technological developments, globalization, regulatory changes, and evolving customer expectations. Commercial banks are exposed to various financial and non-financial risks, including credit risk, market risk, liquidity risk, operational risk, interest rate risk, cybersecurity risk, compliance risk, and reputational risk. Effective management of these risks is necessary to protect financial stability, profitability, customer confidence, and long-term organizational sustainability. This conceptual study examines the major risk management practices adopted by commercial banks and explores the emerging challenges and trends influencing modern banking risk management. The study is based on secondary data collected from scholarly literature, books, regulatory publications, industry reports, and official banking documents. The study highlights important practices such as risk identification and assessment, credit risk management, liquidity management, asset-liability management, stress testing, internal controls, Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), capital adequacy management, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance. The findings indicate that technological developments such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics, Predictive Analytics, and Regulatory Technology (RegTech) are increasingly being used to improve risk identification, fraud detection, monitoring, and decision-making. However, emerging challenges such as cyber threats, data privacy, climate-related risks, ESG risks, digital fraud, third-party risks, and regulatory complexity require more proactive and integrated approaches. The study concludes that commercial banks need to continuously strengthen their risk management frameworks through advanced technology, effective governance, skilled human resources, strong internal controls, regulatory compliance, and a positive risk culture. A comprehensive and dynamic risk management system can enhance banking resilience, operational efficiency, financial stability, and sustainable long-term growth.
